Real Steel - The Re(al) - view

I have to confess that I never considered this movie till I gave it a chance, last week that is. Reason? Well the story didn't just do it for me ... c'mon robot boxing? That's a plot that equates flop, or so I thought. After two hours, I was astonished by the awesomeness of the movie as a whole.

Of course as I began the movie halfhartedly, I noticed a name - Steven Spielberg - in the opening credits, that kind kicked my enthusiasm for this experience (yeah that's how I like to think of movies); of course I'm a fan of Hugh Jackman, but I've got to confess that it would take a better plot for me to consider how his performance would (positively) affect the movie. The major reason Real Steel cuts across the line with viewers is solely because of the story/plot (in my opinion); some say it's a tacky story baptised in sports movie clichés, others say a weak story backed by thrilling fight scenes and good use of characters that emotionally tap into the underdog complex of the viewer.

I belong to the second group of viewers.

Kung Fu Panda (Random Image)

Po: Maybe I should just quit and go back to making noodles.
Oogway: Quit, don't quit? Noodles, don't noodles? You are too concerned about what was and what will be. There is a saying: yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the "present."

Brave - The Re(al) - view

Brave is a very unique film ... the good kind that is, afterall its a Pixar movie! Yes, its story doesn't have the profoundness of Up, nor as groundbreaking as Ratatouille and The Incredibles; but still Brave is quite a lovley movie and frankly a breath of fresh air from all the conventional Disney princess/love themed movies of past and recent ... Tangled anyone?

After reading a couple of reviews, I've discovered that people often forget that Pixar primarily makes animated movies that appeal to kids, the secondary is that these movies have also been made in a manner that simultaneously captures the attention of adults as well; therefore reading that Brave is too kid-centric is quite sad (Newsflash - so are the other Pixar movies).

Dirty Harry (Random Images)

[after a battered crook has accused Harry of beating him]
Chief: Have you been following that man?
Harry Callahan: Yeah, I've been following him on my own time. And anybody can tell I didn't do that to him.
Chief: How?
Harry Callahan: Cause he looks too damn good, that's how!

The Killer: Freeze cop. Now, left hand, pull out your gun.
[Harry pulls out his .44 Magnum]
The Killer: My, that's a big one.

Doctor: Sure, Harry. We can save the leg.
[takes out some scissors]
Harry Callahan: What are you going to do with those?
Doctor: Going to cut your pants off.
Harry Callahan: No. I'll take them off.

The Expendables 2 - The Re(al) - view

Barney Ross: I heard another rumor that you were bitten by a king cobra.
Booker: Yeah. But after five days of agonizing pain, the cobra died.
When you've got a poster like this, how dare you complain of too much action
You may want to skip this review if you've not seen the movie; and if you have .... welcome!!!

I am sick and tired of people complain that The Expendables (Parts 1 & 2) are too violent, c'mon! that was  it's intended goal, this is a movie that celebrates the era of the "tough guy movies" of the 1970's & 80's - like Rocky, The Terminator, Robocop, Die Hard, Commando, Rambo etc. The common denominator for films like these was a single protagonist taking on a large number of bad guys in very unrealistic manners .. but who cared? It was fun to watch period!

The Expendables is like an all-star classical action movie; hence if you never appreciated these movie in the 70's - 90's, then how can you possibly enjoy the all-star version.

Now to the plot, the Expendables is in this format - A group of mercenaries (The Expendables) are sent on a mission as usual (OK, maybe not as usual) and what was supposed to be a simple pick up in a jungle in Albania, was sabotaged by an international arms dealer (named Jean Vilain); in the process killing the newest & youngest member of the expendables (Billy played by Liam Hemsworth), which was kind of sad, and the rest well ... if you're a classical action movie fan you already know; and if not ... The expendables set out on a revenge mission that is super bloody!

Simply put - a revenge movie.

Here are the few movies Nora Ephron worked on as either producer or director or both! I decided to do this after watching her last movie - Julie & Julia. Goodbye :)

Braveheart (Random Images)

William Wallace: Lower your flags and march straight back to England, stopping at every home you pass by to beg forgiveness for a hundred years of theft, rape, and murder. Do that and your men shall live. Do it not, and every one of you will die today.
