This is a look at the guy playing a role made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger in Robert E. Howard's Conan the Barbarian. Also known for playing Ronon Dex on Stargate Atlantis (2004 - 2009) and recently as the Dothraki King, "Khal Drogo" in the Emmy-nominated HBO series "Game of Thrones" (2011).
Born Joseph Jason Namakaeha Momoa in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 1st, 1971; he moved to Hawaii where he landed a lead role in the action drama series"Baywatch Hawaii" (1989 - 2001).
In 2004, after the short lived series "North Shore", he was cast in "Stargate Atlantis" and "Game of Thrones" where he performed the traditional the Haka, a traditional war dance of the Maori of New Zealand, to illustrate to the producers that he was Khal Drogo. The audition was with the same casting director who was casting the titular role in the reboot of Conan the Barbarian. His approach, like the filmmakers, was to pull from the comics rather than the popular Schwarzenegger 1982 film.
He lives with actress Lisa Bonet (Lenny Kravitz's ex-wife) with whom he has two children: Lola and Nakoa-Wolf.
Conan the Barbarian also stars Rachel Nichols, Stephen Lang, Rose McGowan and Ron Pearlman. And it opens tomorrow (August 19) worldwide.
