Dallas Buyers Club: The Re(al)-view

Dr. Eve Saks: None of those drugs have been approved by the FDA.
Ron Woodroof: Screw the FDA. I'm gonna be DOA.
Matthew McConaughey has sure come a long way in his career; 10 years ago he was that toned guy that only acted romantic comedies, with one or two action movies on the side; now he's switched to roles that's gradually propelling him into acting icon. Yes, I said it ... Icon. The buzz around Dallas Buyers Club (DBC) was Jared Leto playing a transgender woman, and when you're done with DBC, you would understand why between McConaughey and Leto, they have won nearly 50 accolades.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Random Images)

Benjamin Button: [Voice over; letter to his daughter] For what it's worth: it's never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There's no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you're proud of. If you find that you're not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again.

Saving Private Ryan (Random Images)

Gen. George C. Marshall: I have a letter here, written a long time ago, to a Mrs. Bixby in Boston. So bear with me. "Dear Madam: I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant-General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any words of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom. Yours very sincerely and respectfully, Abraham Lincoln."

The Country Girl (Random Image)

Georgie Elgin: Let's say I try my small way to help
Bernie Dodd: That's what my ex-wife used to keep me reminding of, cheerfully. She had a theory that behind every great man there was a great woman. She also was thoroughly convinced that she was great and all I needed to qualify was guidance on her part.
Georgie Elgin: Still does not prove that the theory is completely wrong. I imagine one can go through history and find a few good examples.
Bernie Dodd: It's a pity that Leonardo da Vinci never had a wife to guide him, he might have really gotten somewhere.

The Bridge on the River Kwai (Random Images)

Colonel Saito: Do not speak to me of rules. This is war! This is not a game of cricket!

Colonel Nicholson: One day the war will be over. And I hope that the people that use this bridge in years to come will remember how it was built and who built it. Not a gang of slaves, but soldiers, British soldiers, Clipton, even in captivity.
Commander Shears: You mean, you intend to uphold the letter of the law, no matter what it costs?
Colonel Nicholson: Without law, Commander, there is no civilization.
Commander Shears: That's just my point; here, there is no civilization.
Colonel Nicholson: Then we have the opportunity to introduce it.
Colonel Saito: You are defeated but you have no shame. You are stubborn but you have no pride. You endure but you have no courage.

James Gandolfini: A Tribute

Regardless of the many awesome roles he played in movies, James Gandolfinin will be remembered mostly for his performance on the hit show - The Sopranos as Tony Soprano, a troubled mob boss who happens to be seeing a therapist, amidst trying to balance his family life and a career in crime.

“If you can quote the rules, then you can obey them.” - Tony Soprano

Virgil: Hi.
Alabama: Hi... cigarette?
Virgil: No... that's a very nice outfit.
Alabama: This? I got this in Las Vegas, Nevada.
[pause]
Virgil: Alabama, where's our coke and where's Clarence, and when's he coming back?
Alabama: I'm sorry, I think you have the wrong room. My name is Saddie. We don't have any coke but there's a Pepsi machine down the hall. I don't know anybody named Clarence but perhaps my husband does. You can ask him because he'll be home any minute. He plays football. He's just at a... practice.

Star Wars (Random Images)

Darth Vader: He is here.
Governor Tarkin: Obi-Wan Kenobi? What makes you think so?
Darth Vader: A tremor in the Force. The last time I felt it was in the presence of my old master.
Governor Tarkin: Surely he must be dead by now.
Darth Vader: Don't underestimate the Force.
Governor Tarkin: The Jedi are extinct, their fire has gone out of the universe. You, my friend, are all that's left of their religion.
[answering a comm signal]
Governor Tarkin: Yes?
Voice over comm: We have an emergency alert in detention block AA-23.
Governor Tarkin: The Princess? Put all sections on alert.
Darth Vader: Obi-wan *is* here. The Force is with him.
Governor Tarkin: If you're right, he must not be allowed to escape.
Darth Vader: Escape is not his plan. I must face him, alone.

My Fair Lady (Random Image)

Alfred P. Doolittle: The old bloke died and left me four thousand pounds a year in his bloomin' will. Who asked him to make a gentleman out of me? I was happy. I was free. I touched pretty nigh everyone for money when I wanted it, same as I touched him. Now, I'm tied neck and heels, and everybody touches me. A year ago, I hadn't a relation in the world except one or two who wouldn't speak to me. Now, I've fifty, and not a decent week's wages amongst the lot of 'em. Oh, I have to live for others now, not for myself. Middle-class morality.

Best Movies of 2012

I know it's a bit late posting this list, but all blame goes to the studios for releasing most of the best at the very end of the year, making it difficult for aficionados like myself to get my 'eyes' on them on time (seven were released between November & December). And these list comprises of nine movies because of a particular film I am yet to watch - Moonrise Kingdom. Upon watching it I am confident it would have a huge effect on the list.

BUT before diving into the list, here are the fallout five (five movies that were so close to making it on the list, it just goes to show how difficult it was to compile this list.)

5. Killing Them Softly

Ratatouille (Random Images)

I LOVE this film.

[frame freezes as Remy bursts through a window carrying a book over his head]
Remy: [voiceover] This is me. I think it's apparent that I need to rethink my life a little bit. What's my problem? First of all, I'm a rat. Which means, life is hard. Second, I have a highly developed sense of taste and smell.

If only I could vote for the 2013 Academy Awards ...

It would look like this:

This is not a prediction, 'cause I am certain it would be totally inaccurate (except for Daniel Day-Lewis and Brave). These picks are essentially my wish list of winners, and for categories where I'm unfamiliar with the nominees ... well you'll find out.

Schindler's List (Random Image)

Oskar Schindler: I could have got more out. I could have got more. I don't know. If I'd just... I could have got more.
Itzhak Stern: Oskar, there are eleven hundred people who are alive because of you. Look at them.
Oskar Schindler: If I'd made more money... I threw away so much money. You have no idea. If I'd just...
Itzhak Stern: There will be generations because of what you did.
Oskar Schindler: I didn't do enough!
Itzhak Stern: You did so much.
[Schindler looks at his car]
Oskar Schindler: This car. Goeth would have bought this car. Why did I keep the car? Ten people right there. Ten people. Ten more people.
[removing Nazi pin from lapel]
Oskar Schindler: This pin. Two people. This is gold. Two more people. He would have given me two for it, at least one. One more person. A person, Stern. For this.
[sobbing]
Oskar Schindler: I could have gotten one more person... and I didn't! And I... I didn't!
